the last few days

We've been having a bit of a hectic but glorious last few days and I will add photos from our adventures.
Thursday at TA in the morning, then to the Ethiopian Pediatric Society in the late morning, afternoon, then to a dinner party in the evening at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant, along with music and traditional dancing  Wild.   Then in the early morning hours on Friday, Rosie arrived sans luggage.  Sigh.
Friday back at the Ethiopian Pediatric Society meeting in the morning and back with Asfaw at his school in the afternoon.  Glorious.  The children were there and we both fell in love with them.  Check out those photos.  Ro stayed back at the Red Cross to rest.  Cindy and I also had quite a ride back to the Red Cross.  Then early Saturday AM, Ro and I headed back to the airport to retrieve her luggage.  Another mini-adventure but success.  Then back to the airport at 5am to head to Axum.
Saturday--Axum, today Lali Bela.  Wow!!!!! about sums it up, including airports, plane rides, tours of each place, the hotels, the food, the people, the surrounding scenery.  Tomorrow morning we are off to Gonder.
Here are some photos.  I will try and add more in future blogs!!

The children at Asfaw's grade 1-4 school headed to lunch on the grounds

This felt like a "close encounters" experience as the kids
all wanted to just touch us and shake our hands

the children and one of the older workers on the grounds

the gate to the school. Asere Hawabrat Primary School.
The girl in the yellow sweater was my favorite
not an easy choice though.

school boys.  first graders are very cute and also very smart

like first graders everywhere the boys stay with boys, girls with girls
Not sure who are more beautiful.
9,10, 11 year old boys and one 64 y/o!
The band at the Ethiopian restaurant, Friday night.

very popular for both Ethiopians and tourists like us

Rosie at top of hill outside church in Axum

the view from the church.
the camera doesn't do it justice.
So many photos, it is hard to pick what to put here!
We saw every possible site in Axum in one day.
Due to a grade tour guide.

Ro at the airport in Axum.
Pretty good looking for jet lag and no sleep in several days

our plane from Axum to Lali Bela
Ethiopian airlines never leaves on time, going either early or late
don't forget to confirm your flight the day before!!
we've done well...guides take good care of us

Lunch with our wonderful guide in Lali Bela.  Tamru Ketema
We saw all the churches.  They are phenomenal.
We were at the 7 Olives Hotel which was owned by a niece
of Haile Selassie until she fled during the 70s.
Small round table is typical Ethiopian for the Injera lunch.

one of the stairways down.
not easy for me while the Ethiopians just bound up and down quite easily.

a closer view of the top part of the stairs.
Tamru held my hand.

one of the churches.
The whole thing is below ground level.
How did they do it??  Angels or 65,000 people?
11 or 12 churches in 23 years

the top of Bet Giyorgis church (all the churches start with Bet)
the top is at ground level.
the height is 15 meters.  the whole thing is created
out of the ground somehow

another view

here's the bottom taken from the top
